Specializations are important because the game normally lets you only pick one, and IMO, melee weapon specializations are far superior to gun specializations. You don't need ammo, you can kill tons of zeds (especially as you level up the specialization) and you can unlock a special move for whatever melee weapon you specialize in. Guns are still effective enough even if you don't specialize in them. Whereas gun specializations really don't give that much of a benefit- the shotgun gives the best benefit if it's leveled up and you have a good shotgun, but the others really have very little benefit.

Moreover, melee weapons are pretty ineffective with a gun specialization.So, for me, no one gets a gun specialization. I prefer fighting with melee weapons, and them having a gun specialization makes them ineffective fighters. I disliked how so many heroes already had gun specializations chosen for them.Of course, I mod my game to allow multiple specializations. But those who don't mod are stuck with whatever the game gives them. I found it frustrating as hell that I could start as a nobody and head shot moving zeds at 25+ m with a pistol. That's extremely difficult and I've been shooting for 25 years. So, what I'm going to do is make guns much, MUCH, worse pre-specialization, and as you improve shooting and then specializations, you'll see a dramatic improvement.

Like a pistol 2 or 3, 25m headshot will be no problem and hordes will drop like leaves. With a revolver, same thing, but rate of fire won't increase. So revolver 2 or 3 might be a one shot on Juggs with big bore revolvers.
